1. What is a TracBack?
- TracBack Overview
- TracBack is a clever transposition of the word
backtrack, an intransitive verb commonly defined as:
- The Garmin TracBack feature allows the user to follow the currently
active tracklog recording in reverse.
- When navigating a TracBack, the active track
recording is traced backwards (backtracked) to the original starting
location.
- Some inReach devices record a hidden tracklog to ensure a
return breadcrumb trail is always available, regardless of tracking
status.
- Garmin Definition
- TracBack
is defined by Garmin in their
GPS Guide for Beginners as well as many of
their product user manuals:
- There are also many Garmin support pages that can provide additional
TracBack information:
- Application
- Navigate a TracBack to
retrace all or part of your current trip.
- The Garmin TracBack feature can be helpful
when:
- Finding your way back to a trailhead
- Finding your way back to a trail marker
- Finding your way back to a previous trail junction
- Finding your way back to an item left behind
- Finding your way back to your campsite
- Finding your way back to your car
2. Enabling TracBack

4. TracBack vs Back to Start
- TracBack
- Just as the name implies, TracBack means to follow your track
backwards.
- TracBack takes you back along the path you traveled.
- TracBack swaps the start and finish points from the currently active
tracklog or activity recording.
- The tracklog or activity recording is then navigated from
trackpoint to trackpoint in reverse order.
- If a recording is not available, some devices can use a hidden
tracklog to achieve similar results.
- Back to Start
- Just as the name implies, Back to Start means to navigate
back to your starting location.
- Back to Start takes you back to the beginning of a recorded track or
activity.
- Back to Start may provide one or more of the following navigation options.
- Direct: Navigate directly to the starting location in a
straight line.
- Route: Calculate a route back to the starting location based on
the currently selected activity.
- TracBack: Takes you back to the starting location along the
path you traveled.
