New
GPSMAP 66sr
I just unboxed my new GPSMAP 66sr GPSr! Now What?
Congratulations! You are the owner of Garmins most advanced handheld personal navigation device to date! You're probably just aching to power the GPSMAP
66sr on and get outside right away, but your new
GPSr is not quite ready yet. We recommended first completing the tasks below to ensure your
GPSMAP 66sr is fully updated with all the latest features and fully prepared to provide you with the best user experience possible.
- Install a
screen protector (only if desired, but probably not necessary)
-
Power the unit on by pressing and releasing the power button
-
Select your desired language
-
Ensure the Garmin Express program is running on your computer
-
Connect the GPSMAP 66sr to your computer via USB cable
-
Once Garmin Express detects the GPSMAP 66sr,
follow the prompts to complete registration
-
Allow Garmin Express to install all available
software and map
updates, following any prompts as directed
-
Create an archival backup of your device
- Find and load additional
maps as
desired
- If present, rename [GPSr]\Garmin\GGZ\preload.ggz
to [GPSr]\Garmin\GGZ\preload.old
to disable any outdated geocache data
- Allow the Li-ion battery time to charge fully
- While the battery is charging, visit the
Features,
Function,
Operation and
Setup
pages to familiarize yourself with the GPSMAP 66sr
- Power up the GPSMAP 66sr and place it in a location with a clear view of the sky
(preferably outdoors) to perform a first time location initialization
- While you're waiting, check the
Common Issues list and see what
others are saying about their GPSMAP 66sr
- Now get outdoors and have some fun! (take the
GPSMAP 66sr with you)
