I just unboxed my new GPSMAP 66 GPSr! Now What?
Congratulations! You are the proud new owner of Garmins most advanced handheld personal navigation device to date! You're probably just aching to power the GPSr on and get outside right away, but your new
GPSMAP 66 is not quite ready yet. It is highly recommended you first complete the tasks below to ensure your
GPSMAP 66 is prepared with all the latest features and fully able to provide you with the best user experience possible.
- Install a
screen protector (only if desired, but probably not necessary)

Install the NiMH battery pack or fresh AA batteries

Power the unit on by pressing and releasing the power button

Select your desired language
-
Connect the GPSMAP 66 to your computer via USB cable

Complete Garmin driver installation as necessary

Register
your Garmin GPSMAP 66 and receive a 10% discount coupon from Garmin

Save an archival backup of your device
- Check and Update your GPSMAP 66
Firmware
- Load some
maps on your
GPSMAP 66
- Rename [GPSr]\Garmin\GGZ\preload.ggz
to [GPSr]\Garmin\GGZ\preload.old
(this disables outdated geocache data)
- Allow the NiMH battery time to charge fully
- While the battery is charging, visit the
Features,
Function,
Operation and
Setup pages to familiarize yourself with your new GPSr
- Once fully charged, power on the GPSMAP
66 and place it outdoors in clear view of the sky for ~15 minutes to perform a first time location initialization

Remove 'Main Menu' from Ribbon Page Sequence (see
bug 50)
- Now get outdoors and enjoy your new Garmin GPSr!
