It's barely noticeable and, if truth be told, it was there on my 700 also.

The reason I upgraded was I wanted a camera and I also didn't want to carry around two devices. The camera isn't much, but it's handy to have geotagged waypoint pictures. And it helped me geotag pictures in my early hiking days when I recorded a track, but hadn't set the date/time on my digital superzoom camera properly. By matching a waypoint picture taken on my old Oregon 650 with the same picture taken with my digital camera, I was able to fix the date/time taken and then geotag the pictures properly.

I found it quite noticeable on the 700 as I mostly used it at night.
In day mode as most people probably use it, using a map with a white or very light ground colour it wasn't an issue but in night mode, using a map with a black ground colour it was very noticeable, to the point that instead of getting a nice black colour it was a washed out dark grey, even with the backlight set to the lowest useable setting.

I had a grizzle about it a few years ago and I did contact Garmin about it but they weren't interested.

Behind the screen there's several layers of light diffusing material stacked on top of each other, adding one or two more layers of this material pretty much stops the bleed altogether in night mode so a map with a black ground colour displays as black.
