I also use a GPSMAP 65s. Even today I went for a walk with it and it showed the "turn warnings" with the tones.Andy wrote: Sat Oct 12, 2024 3:49 pm So, maybe it just will not work with this card or with other maps installed.
- The turn warnings are not always shown at the turn or right before the turn. It can show them 50-150m before the turn. It seems to have a mind of its own. By this, what I mean to say is, don't expect that it'll notify you when the turn arrives - it will notify you well before the turn arrives.
- The volume of the turn warnings tones is very low, and it could easily be missed in traffic noise.
- I use Thorsten Kukuk's OSM maps (which are routable, and have house numbers for this country). Any routable map should work.
- I have several maps installed in the Micro SD card that show up under "Setup Map" -> "Select Map", but only one of them is enabled - the one I am using. All other maps are disabled.
- In Setup->Routing, I have Activity = Pedestrian Walking, Calculation Method = Minimize Distance, Lock on Road = No, Avoidance Setup = Ferries, Off Route Recalculation = Off. The "lock on road" appears to have no effect on the turn warnings, but it makes the position triangle sticky (it doesn't move about or change heading as you move a little or turn the GPS receiver around). The turn warnings are shown regardless.
- Note that it is the device that generates the route (and where to show the turn warnings), hence the requirement of a map that supports routing. I don't use any Garmin apps. The maps were copied to a Micro SD card used in the device directly (in Garmin/ directory), and waypoints via GPX files (in Garmin/GPX/ directory) on the card.
Thorsten Kukuk's maps are good and have routing support if you like that style and there's a map available for your location. BBBike has a generator for whatever region you are interested in, and in many styles, and the Garmin formats there have routing support. For an English map of Japan, try:
