Garmin GPSMAP65s routing issues
Hi everyone,
Garmin just exchanged my GPSMAP65s because I thought it was defective but the one I received has the same problem.
When navigating a route while hiking with the hiking profile there are no acoustic warnings at turns. There are visual warnings with white arrows that a turn is coming up, but no sounds at all.
There is also no recalculation of the route if I deviate from the original one.
The weird thing is that the routing works fine in the car, including sounds and recalculation.
Does anyone have any ideas to what could be causing this?

Re: Garmin GPSMAP65s routing issues
Going to need some more information before anyone can really help you.
- What are all of your settings under Setup > Routing when this occurs?
- Which maps are loaded and enabled?
- Was the route you are navigating created on the device or externally?
- When routing in the car, are you using a different profile?

Re: Garmin GPSMAP65s routing issues
Thanks, I’m open to any suggestions.
I’ve tried all kinds of different settings and in the end following the advice from Garmin I also tried a master reset back to factory settings, and that didn’t resolve the problem.
As far as routes go I tried both: first with a route created in Basecamp and then uploaded to the GPS, but I also tried just picking a spot on the map and hitting GO. The GPSMAP then created its own route. As I said it routed properly and showed me the routing on screen while I was walking, but with no sounds and no recalculation.
ROUTING SETTINGS:
When walking I used:
Activity: Hiking
Calculation method: prompted (I also tried minimize distance)
Lock on road: No
Avoidance setup : Ferries
Off route recalculation: automatic
When routing in the car I used:
Activity: Automobile Driving
Calculation method: minimize time
Lock on road: No
Avoidance setup : U-Turns, Unpaved roads, Carpool Lanes, Ferries
Off route recalculation: automatic
MAPS
(maps with the * are installed on a mini-SD card, the rest came pre-installed)
(I prefer "Freizeitkarte" but I also tried using the Garmin TopoActive map with the same results.)
Enabled: Worldwide DEM Basemap, NR
Disabled: TopoActive Europe 2024.10, East
Enabled: Garmin DEM Map EU 2023.10
Disabled: TopoActive Europe 2024.10, West
Disabled: TopoActive Europe 2024.10, Central
Disabled: *OFM_BNL (28-09-2024)
Enabled: *Freizeitkarte_NLD (Release 24.06)
Enabled: *OpenTopoMap Netherlands contours
Disabled: *otm-netherlands 20240927
Disabled: BirdEye Select Kompass-Switzerland
Disabled: Digital Globe
Disabled – BirsEye Select France
Disabled – BirdsEye Select Kompass – Austria + East Alps

You should check if the Sound option is enabled during the Hiking activity (Profile), also try selecting a different sound.Andy wrote: Tue Oct 01, 2024 6:25 pm There are visual warnings with white arrows that a turn is coming up, but no sounds at all.

What are you doing differently between 'automotive routing' and 'Hiking'? What Setup options are different? What happens if you use the Automotive profile for a hike?

Yes checked, sounds are on, also tried different ones. Anyway tones are switched on or off independently from the routing profiles.Przekątny wrote: Thu Oct 03, 2024 7:11 pm You should check if the Sound option is enabled during the Hiking activity (Profile), also try selecting a different sound.

Re: Garmin GPSMAP65s routing issues
Thanks for the suggestion, I tried testing the "automobile driving" profile while hiking and still didn't get any sounds.GPSrChive wrote: Thu Oct 03, 2024 11:22 pm What are you doing differently between 'automotive routing' and 'Hiking'? However while driving in the car I tried the "biking" and the "pedestrian walking" profiles and the sounds worked

Testing the hiking profile while driving led to problems because of route recalculation errors.
I really don't understand what's going on.
The only thing I can think of which is different between driving in the car and hiking on foot is speed. I'll have to try testing driving at 5km per hour and see what happens, walking at car speeds is going to be difficult

Re: Garmin GPSMAP65s routing issues
Can you test the same hiking routes using only the pre-loaded TopoActive and make sure all other maps are disabled?

Re: Garmin GPSMAP65s routing issues
I tested it again with only one TopoActive map enabled and everything else disabled. Same problem.
However, if I do a master reset, remove the card, and then use only the TopoActive map, then it works.
As soon as I replaced the card and selected another map the problem came back. And after that, the problem persists even I select only the TopoActive map.
So, maybe it just will not work with this card or with other maps installed.
And I also tested once again in the car. With only the TopoActive map enabled, if I select the automobile driving profile I get an error saying that automobile driving is not possible with detailed maps. So I tried driving slowly and selected a bicycle profile and everything works fine, sounds and recalculation. Also with the card and other maps.
This just doesn't make sense. It feels like a software bug to me.

With the Car Profile enabled, create a new profile, after creating it,Andy wrote: Sat Oct 12, 2024 3:49 pm So I tried driving slowly and selected a bicycle profile and everything works fine, sounds and recalculation.
change the Routing method in the settings > activity (car), change it to Hiking.
Give the profile a name, e.g. Hiking 1,
after mapping the route, check if the audio information works.
