IP Rating

  • Ingress Protection (IP) ratings are used to grade resistance of an enclosure against intrusion of dust and water.
  • Introduced in 1976, IEC 60529 is the international standard that defines the IP certification process.
  • ISO 20653 expands on the IEC standard by introducing additional levels of protection.

IP Rating Format
  • Each IP rating uses the same basic format, starting with the letters IP (Ingress Protection) followed by two numerals.
    • Sometimes, a third letter may follow the numerals to describe additional testing conditions or substances.
  • The first numeral rates dust ingress protection, and the second numeral rates water ingress protection.
    • When an 'X' is displayed instead of a numeral, this indicates no testing or certification for that category.

Garmin Water Rating Definitions

IPX6: Protection against water projected at all angles through a 12.5mm nozzle at 100 liters/min + 100 kN/m2 pressure from 3 meters distance for 3 minutes.
IPX7: Withstands incidental exposure to water of up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.
1 ATM: Withstands pressures equivalent to a depth of 10 meters.
3 ATM: Withstands pressures equivalent to a depth of 30 meters.
5 ATM: Withstands pressures equivalent to a depth of 50 meters.
10 ATM: Withstands pressures equivalent to a depth of 100 meters.
Dive: Designed to comply with DIN EN 13319.
Waterproof: Similar to Dive, this rating is used primarily for VIRB action cameras.
