FAQ

T1.) Where do I find the tracklog on the Garmin Oregon?

The internal tracklog is available on the Oregon through Main Menu>Track Manager>Current Track. If Setup>Tracks>Track Log>Record, Show On Map is enabled the track will be displayed as a black line (by default) on the map page.

T2.) How may track points does the Garmin Oregon internal tracklog hold?

It contains the most recent 10,000 track points.

T3.) What information does the Garmin Oregon save in the tracklog?

Each track point in the tracklog contains: coordinates, elevation and timestamp. If you use the heart rate or cadence senor the data from these devices is also included in the tracklog.

T4.) What is the elevation in the tracklog based on? GPS or altimeter?

See this FAQ for an answer.

T5.) Is there a way to prevent some of the tracklog data (i.e. elevation) from being collected?

No.

T6.) How do I delete the current tracklog?

You can clear the current tracklog by selecting either Main Menu>Track Manager>Current Track>Clear Current Track or Main Menu>Setup>Reset>Clear Current Track.

T7.) How do I download the tracklog from the Garmin Oregon to my computer?

The internal tracklog is copied into a file called [OR drive]:\Garmin\GPX\Current\Current.gpx each time the Oregon is connected to a computer. Current.gpx will contain one track for each segment in the tracklog. Each segment has a name like "Current Track: DD MMM YYYY HH:MM".

T8.) How often does the Garmin Oregon create new track segments?

The Oregon appears to create new track segments under the following circumstances:

T9.) Can I upload tracks from my computer and see them on my Oregon?

Yes. Copy a gpx file containing the track data into [OR drive]:\Garmin\GPX and the tracks will be available under Main Menu>Track Manager. Select the track you want to view and select Show On Map.

T10.) Can I change the color of the tracks I view on the Oregon?

Yes. Select Main Menu>Track Manager>[select track]>Set Color and select 1 of 16 available colors. The color of the current tracklog can be changed under Main Menu>Setup>Tracks>Color .

T11.) How many tracks can I upload to the Oregon? What is the maximum number of trackpoints supported per uploaded track?

The Oregon supports up to 200 saved tracks. These can be a combination of uploaded tracks or tracks saved on the GPS itself.

The maximum number of trackpoints supported in an uploaded track is 10,000, the Oregon will truncate the track at the end if the track is longer than 10,000 trackpoints.

T12.) How can I view multiple tracks at the same time on the map?

Yes. From the Track Manager, find each track you want to make visible and select Show On Map. If the track is currently visible you can turn it of by selecting Hide on Map. There is no way to enable or disable all tracks at once.

T13.) Can I manually save the internal tracklog data?

Yes. At any time the internal tracklog can be manually archived by selecting Main Menu>Track Manager>Current Track>Save Track. Saved tracks get saved to a file with a default name like YYYY-MM-DD and these tracks become visible in the Where To?>Tracks list.

The Oregon will also automatically save tracklog data into archive files if you don't archive the tracklog manually. More details below.

T14.) How do I delete tracks that I've manually saved?

You can delete these files from the Track Manager by selecting a track and choosing Delete, this is the safest way. You can also connect to your computer and delete .gpx files in [drive]:\Garmin\GPX which have the same name as the tracks you want to delete, but there is some evidence that in some cases an internal reference is still present, meaning that the tracks still show up in the Track Manager.

Verify that deleting gpx files also deletes the internal track, and that deleting the files manually always works.

T15.) What if I don't want to manually save my tracklog? What happens if my current tracklog gets too big?

Once the internal tracklog gets near 10,000 trackpoints the Oregon will begin to auto archive individual tracks segments from the current tracklog into files in [drive]:\Garmin\GPX\Archive. The Oregon will move enough tracks segments from the current tracklog to bring the tracklog back below 8,000 trackpoints. The first file created is 1.gpx, then 2.gpx, etc. Each archive file is filled in this manner until it contains about 5,000 trackpoints (or is ~1MB in size) and then another file with a unique number is created. Once a total of 20 files is reached the Oregon will delete the oldest file before creating a new file.

Needs to be updated, the filenames have changed.

T16.) How do I download saved or archived tracklogs from the Oregon to my computer?

Saved tracks are saved in [drive]:\Garmin\GPX with a filename which contains the name of the track, for example my-track.gpx . Copy this file to your computer and/or open it in your favorite track analysis software.

Automatically archived Tracks are saved in [drive]:\Garmin\GPX\Archive and have filenames like 1.gpx, 2.gpx, etc.

Archived file names have changed.

T17.) Do the saved/archived tracks have the same information as the tracklog?

Yes. Unlike older Garmin GPSs the saved/archived trackpoints contain the same information as in the original tracklog (ie. coordinates, time, elevation). Saved/archived tracks also have the same number of trackpoints as the original tracklog.

T18.) Can I manually save a part of my current tracklog?

Yes. Select Main Menu>Track Manager>Current Track>Save Portion. You will be shown a list of track segments in the current tracklog sorted by time (oldest to newest). Make a selection for the first segment you want to save and you will prompted to select the last segment you want to save. The unit will prompt you to name (default name will be the current time and date) the partial track and save it.

T19.) Can I navigate along a track? Is Tracback supported?

Yes to both questions. Tracks are available as navigation destinations under Where To?>Tracks. Selecting a track will start navigation along the track. Distance to Next and Distance to Dest will be the distance from your location along the track to the end point of the track. The bearing pointer will guide you along the track. The Off Course data field will indicate your distance away from the track.

Any track can be reversed in the Track Manager by selecting the track and using the Copy Reversed function. This allows you to reverse any track (or part of the current tracklog) for the purposes of navigating along the track in the reverse direction.

Tracback is also supported on the current tracklog -- it essentially streamlines the process of reversing the entire current tracklog and starting navigation to this track. Tracback can be initiated by selecting Main Menu>Where To?>Tracks>Current Track and pushing the green Tracback button.

T20.) What is the file called Saved.gpx in the Archive folder?

When you navigate to a track or perform an Area Calculation the track data is saved into a file called [OR drive]:\Garmin\GPX\Archive\Saved.gpx .

T21.) Can track archives be saved to the SD card without using a computer?

No.

T22.) Can tracks be loaded from the SD card?

Yes. Copy the gpx file into [OR SD drive]:\Garmin\GPX and the Oregon will load gpx files from this directly similar to the way it does from internal memory.

T23.) How can I prevent the ugly jumps in my tracklog which connect the end of my previous activity to my new location?

Before you start an activity select Setup>Reset>Reset Trip Data and then Reset>Clear Current Track to start a new track segment. After you are done with your activity save the current track. This track will not have any stray segments or jumps.

Issues

Bugs

  1. [x00] Tracks imported from Mapsource (and other 3rd party tools) sometimes can't be deleted from the unit. Deleting the file that was used to import them (temp.gpx) and deleting them on the unit will not remove them. The only workaround is to delete the /Garmin/GPX directory and restart the unit, but remove an eventual SD card first. It isn't clear what causes this to happen in the first place but it could be the order of deletion on the unit and removal of the file. (3.22)
  2. Current tracklog segments created before and after power cycling the unit are sometimes joined on the Map page. This causes clutter on the Map page and requires additional editing to clean up the track off-line. The current tracklog should always start a new segment when the unit is powered on and these segments should not be visibly joined on the map page. (3.01)
  3. ETA to Dest and ETA to Next data fields do not work when navigating along a track. Select WhereTo?>Track>[select track] and add ETA fields to map page. Both fields display the current time, not an estimated time to navigate along the track (2.98)
  4. If a track doesn't contain elevation data (e.g. tracks from Mapsource or 3rd party software) the user should be warned when selecting the Elevation Plot or the option should be grayed out. (2.2)
  5. Saved track segments should show "on top" of the the current tracklog. Currently if you save a track segment and change its color it is immediately invisible because the current tracklog is on top (assuming the current track is set to display on map) (2.93)

Missing features

  1. No option to have a daily archive the tracklog on the Oregon. Currently the archive is based on file size. (60csx) (2.93)
  2. Cannot rename a track in the Track Manager (60csx) (2.93)

New feature requests

  1. Mapsource/BaseCamp should display the color of the track as selected by the Oregon and similarly the Oregon should be able to display the color of the track imported from these tools.
  2. Allow some functions to be applied to all tracks (not just a single track). For example "Show on Map",
"Hide on Map", "Set Color" could be applied to all tracks.
  3. Add the ability to sort the WhereTo?>Track list by distance from location (like waypoints). By default the list is sorted chronologically.
  4. Add the ability to search and filter the Track list by name. (ABC-button like waypoints and POIs)
  5. Add the ability to split a track segment so that it can be saved as a partial tracklog. Currently you can only save an entire track segment.
  6. When saving a partial track the track segment list provided should list the track segments from most recent to least recent. Normally a user will be trying to save a partial track from the most recent track segment (i.e. tracback). In the current implementation the user has to scroll through several pages of tracklogs to find the most recent one.
  7. Cannot view, delete or rename auto archived tracks from the GPS. User should have access to these tracks without having to use a computer.
    • A file manager would solve this problem.
  8. Add the ability to see all track details from the track manager. An additional "Track Information" button under each track could show statistics about the track: start/stop time, track length, area, speed stats, elevation stats, etc.
  9. Navigate from current location (can be outside a track) to the nearest point of the track and then following the track to the point selected in the track (now can only navigate to the end of the track). Show the magenta line from the current location. This will be the track navigability that had garmin in old etrex cx products.

Resolved

  1. (3.70) Cannot change the color of the current tracklog, it is always black. (60csx)
  2. (2.93) No Garmin specific release note. Garmin enhanced NMEA support to include A301 for direct tracklog transfer.
  3. (2.85) Fixed track logging setting being changed when changing profiles while simulating GPS
  4. (2.7) Added a display option in the setup menu to save battery power. Add support for a low-power tracklog only mode. In order to preserve battery life unit should support a mode where the display is disabled and only records tracklogs to preserve battery life.
  5. (2.7) No specific Garmin release note. Tracklog recording setting is not preserved with profile. Change Setup>Tracks>Tracklog to Record, Show on Map in Profile A. Switch to Profile B and set Setup>Tracks>Tracklog to Record, Do Not Show. Switck back to Profile A, verify the setting is still Record, Show on Map and then back to Profile B. Profile B will be set to Record, Show on Map (2.6)
  6. (2.3) Added option to clear the current track from Track Manager. (2.2)
