Check Firmware Version
- Power on the GPSMAP 66sr
- Select [Setup > About]
- The GPSMAP 66sr Software (Firmware) Version and Unit ID will be displayed:
- Firmware versions ending in 1-9 are Beta releases
- Firmware version ending in "0" are Full releases
Garmin Express
Firmware updates, map updates, Connect IQ
applications and other optional software improvements for your Garmin GPSMAP
66sr are managed with the Garmin Express application. Links to versions for both PC and Mac
can be found in
Software.
- Connect your Garmin GPSMAP 66sr via USB and enter
Mass Storage Mode
- Start the Garmin Express application and choose your device from the menu
- Select desired updates and follow the prompts to complete installation
WebUpdater
The Garmin WebUpdater program has been reported to
find and install updates available for the GPSMAP 66sr that other methods fail
to locate. Versions for both PC and Mac are available in
Software.
- Connect your Garmin GPSMAP 66sr via USB and enter
Mass Storage Mode

Run the WebUpdater application and select your device from the menu

Follow the prompts to keep your GPSMAP 66sr updated
Wireless Updates
When connected to the internet via an active
Wi-Fi
connection, the GPSMAP 66sr will periodically check for (non beta) firmware updates
and download them seamlessly in the background when available. Once the
download has completed, the GPSMAP 66sr will prompt the user to install the
firmware update at the next power-on event.
GCD Updates
Current (non beta) firmware updates are available directly from Garmin using the URL
https://download.garmin.com/software/GPSMAP66sr_xyz.gcd and substituting xyz with the desired three digit firmware version. For example, to download firmware version
2.70, replace xyz with 270.
GCD Update Procedure
- Use the links in
Firmware History to download the zipped file for the
desired version
- Unzip the downloaded archive and extract the
*.gcd file
- Rename the
*.gcd file to
gupdate.gcd
- Connect the GPSMAP 66sr to your computer and enter
Mass Storage Mode
- Copy the
gupdate.gcd file to
[GPSr]\Garmin\gupdate.gcd
- Disconnect and reboot the GPSr
- Once the update is completed, the GPSr will delete the
gupdate.gcd file
EXE Updates
Some firmware updates (usually betas) are released as a windows executable containing a compressed
gupdate.gcd file and an installer program. Regardless of OS, the
*.exe can be opened with an archive tool and the
gupdate.gcd file can be extracted for manual updating as outlines above under
GCD Update Procedure.

- Use the links in
Firmware History to download the
*.exe file for the version you need
- Run the downloaded executable and follow the instructions provided
RGN Firmware Install
Should you ever find yourself with an
GPSMAP 66sr that refuses to complete the boot process and all other options have failed to restore the unit to its former glory, a forced
RGN Firmware Installation may be your only hope.

- New GPSMAP 66sr GPS chipset software updates are embedded within
device firmware updates.
