If you are referring to a Garmin Tempe, You will have to configure the Glance for either large or small data fields, then select the Temperature data field.

Note that there is a bug with current firmware where the temperature data from the Tempe is not included in the FIT activity files. This means for example that in Garmin Connect you don't have temperature data. I've reported this bug to Garmin, if you can do so as well it might get fixed.

Is this just for the current firmware, or has this bug always been present for the GPSMAP H1?

I noticed it first with version 6.04, so not certain whether it is an issue in older versions as well. But it wouldn't surprise me if this bug has been present since day one.

Do you know if the data is recorded in GPX activity files? Or is this only a FIT file issue?

The temperature data isn't in the GPX file either.
