eTrex H Firmware Install with Batteries Only?

Good day all,
I Have all the files needed to load firmware 3.60 and USB to serial converter but I would like to know if I can only connect the RX, TX and ground of the RS232 to the eTrex and leave the two batteries in for 3V power supply or must I connect 3V between pin 1 and 4 of the eTrex ?

Have not attempted before. Why no power supply?

You don't need 3V on pin 1, batteries suffice (full ones of course).
I've updated lots of devices on battery power only, never experienced problems.
