GNSS Chipset Performance - Galileo

Unread post by GPSrChive »

I wasn't exactly sure where to make this post, but since I made the following observations while researching eTrex SE Bug 5, I decided to place it here.

eTrex SE Bug 5: The Galileo ID numbers displayed on the Satellite page are incorrect (subtract 47 from each for correct ID).

While comparing the eTrex SE to other Garmin devices to create supporting documentation, I couldn't help but notice that models sharing unique GNSS chipsets also favored specific satellites. All screen captures below were taken at the same location within a minute of each other. For these examples, we were focusing on the Galileo constellation.

The eTrex SE and GPSMAP 67/67i both found 7 Galileo satellites with the Airoha AG3335M/N GNSS chipset:

The GPSMAP 65 and GPSMAP 66sr both found 6 Galileo satellites with the BCM47758 GNSS chipset:

The GPSMAP 66s/st/i and Montana 7x0 all found 3-4 Galileo satellites with the Type M5 (3313) GNSS chipset:

If you put it together like this, we'll talk about the capabilities of each chipset.

Firmware 3.51 has fixed the numbers of Galileo satellites :-)
And here is some information about Airoha AG3335M/N GNSS chipsets.

hello,

do you think that Garmin could improve the performance of the Type M5 (3313) with a new firmware version or is it a hardware issue?

many thanks

I have already seen more than 4 GALILEO Sats on my 750i. Max was 6 I saw.
Garmin DriveSmart 86 MT-D (FW 6.80, HW V8, GPS 9.00.50, 32GB SD)
Garmin Montana 750i (FW 19.20, HW V6, GPS 2.90, Touchscreen 85.07, 64GB SD)
