Third Party Maps Don't Work??? (Yes, they do)

I have a GPSMap 66sr that I bought 2nd hand and it had a memory card that had the 1:25k and 1:50k OS maps. I got a GPSMap 67 today and I tried the card, the unit recognises it as unofficial and won't load it. Just thought I'd let you know really, assuming my maps are unofficial it makes sense they'd block them in newer models :)

Your third party maps are likely locked to another device. We use third party maps with our GPSMAP 67 without any issue.

Just to clarify the map is the Garmin Discoverer OS maps (1:25k/1:50k). I was thinking maybe I'd been sold a 'dodgy' copy type thing, but I've seen in the 4.70 firmware they "Fixed potential “Can’t Authenticate Maps” prompt" and as this is the message I get, maybe it's just a case of it not being fully fixed. Who knows. Maybe they are dodgy maps!

Garmin maps that are downloaded are locked to a specific device. Garmin maps sold on data cards are locked to the card and can be swapped from one device to another. Sounds like the data card that came with the 66sr may have included a map locked to the device, not the card.

Did you ever get the maps working?

No I didn't. I queried it with the person I bought the 66sr from and he bought the cards from eBay so they were just copied maps so I guess that's why, dunno. I bought new maps and gave the card to a friend with a 65 and it worked fine for them :)

Copied Garmin maps are readable on the 66sr but not on the 67. For example the Garmin Topo France V6 map retrieved from the web is readable on my 66sr but does not work on the 67.
On the 67 work the IMG maps that I make with the Jnx2img application from a JNX map, OSM maps, and now IGN topo maps that I found on an official site, the free Garmin Topo comics which is the exact replica of the Topo France V6 but not routable.

I guess Garmin implemented the same "protections" against unlocked Garmin maps as on the Montana 7xx series.

Luckily there are lots of free OSM-based alternatives that do work :) And let's see what Garmin Outdoor Maps+ has in store for Europe coverage!
