MTP mode, 67i and removing files

Unread post by rgschmidt »

Hi all,

I’m a bit confused regarding the discussions about MTP or USB mass storage mode on the new GPSMAP 67(i) models.

For putting new gpx geocaching files on my GPAMAP 66sr I always use the following procedure on my Macbook with latest MacOS (to be absolutely sure that gocaches and waypoints a reread correctly during startup of the device):
- remove \garmin\edm\ folder
- remove \garmin\sql\ folder
- copy new .gpx files to \garmin\gpx\ and overwrite existing
- touch all files in \garmin\gpx\ folder and subfolders with current date

Would this procedure still work on the new GPAMAP 67(i) ?

Thanks in advance, Richard

Since MacOS does not support MTP, you will need to use external tools like https://openmtp.ganeshrvel.com/ or https://www.android.com/filetransfer/ to get access to the file system via MTP.

We do not have a Mac to test with, so please do provide confirmation here for others if you are using a Mac with the new GPSMAP 67.

Thank you!

To add to this, indeed on Mac the device will not show up in Finder. To access files I had to use Android File Transfer. I tried OpenMTP but it did not detect my GPSMAP 67 (even with all Android File Transfer related processes stopped).

Copying and removing files via Android File Transfer worked just fine. I did not notice any directories and files missing compared to the 66sr I had before, but to be fair I didn't do a complete comparison.

However it does seem that Basecamp on Mac does not detect the GPSMAP 67, as the unit will not show up as a volume or device in Finder. Can others confirm this as well?

Ok, it looks like only one application can have access to the unit when connected via USB. If Garmin Express is running for example, Basecamp will not show the GPSMAP. Could be an issue when people have Express configured to always run in the background, which is the default I believe?

OK guys, thanks for the heads up!!

What a shame they have dropped mass storage mode (typically ignore real life use of these devices). I’ll post as soon as I have my first experiences with the 67i.

We didn't expect this change would be met with much fanfare!

Looking forward to your reports!

This is normal. MTP devices under MacOS can be only used by one program at the same time. Garmin Express needs to be closed, if you want to use BaseCamp and vice versa.
