Rino750 AUS freezes on startup

A common problem reported by owners of Australian versions including in NZ.
Device randomly freezes during startup if an SD card is installed, and needs to have the battery removed & replaced to restart.
Issue has been reported in other forums and in negative retailer reviews.
Symptoms are a frozen startup page showing the Garmin logo in center, when the following text appears at the bottom:

The freeze is random, typically 5 to 8 startups.
Different brands, models & size of SD have no effect. Nor what mapping is contained on the card.
Garmin support does not directly acknowledge or address the issue. Initially battery, and then later device replacements are offered, and ultimately refunds due to local consumer law.
Over the last 18 months I have personally experienced the problem on two Rino 750 AUS, and again on two replacement units from Garmin (all of a total of 4 devices). My older Rino650 AUS units remain bulletproof and continue to work fine.
