They instructed you to 'Format the unit'?
BTW, you may want to check out 'Forced RGN Firmware Installation' at our GPSrChive > GPSMAP 66sr > Operation > Recovery page.

DISCLAIMER: THE STEPS OUTLINED BELOW CAN CAUSE SERIOUS HARM TO YOUR UNIT IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG. IF YOU HAVE ISSUES WITH YOUR UNIT, CONTACT GARMIN SUPPORT AND FOLLOW THEIR ADVISE INSTEAD.
Yes they instructed me to actually format the unit. The original e-mail is in Dutch but I translated it. This is what they wrote:

Dear,
Please excuse us for the late response due to exceptional circumstances.
We are working on resolving this issue and get back to normal reaction times.
1) Full reinstallation, including maps :
Format SD-card : Formatting a (micro)SD-card
-> only if you are using an SD-card.
After this you can format the unit itself :
BE AWARE: Only to be executed from a WINDOWS computer, not a Mac.
Before formatting the unit, remove the SD card (if present) and copy the basemap to your computer. After the basemap has been copied to your computer you can format the unit :
- Remove the microSD from the unit
- Connect the unit to your computer using the supplied cable
- Press the 'Windows' and 'E' key at the same time to open Windows Explorer
- Navigate to the 'Garmin' drive
- Open the 'Garmin' folder
- Copy or drag the gmapbmap.img file to your desktop
Warning : Make sure you are targetting the Garmin unit and not some other drive or device. If in doubt, don't continue.
This process will take a couple of minutes. After the process completed successfully, you can restore the basemap on the unit.
- Press the 'Windows' and 'E' key at the same time to open Windows Explorer.
- Right-click the drive named 'Garmin'.
- Click on 'Format'.
- Uncheck 'Quick format'.
- Verify the file system is set to FAT32.
- Verify the volume name is 'GARMIN'.
Reconnect the unit and execute recommended updates using the lastest version of Garmin Express:
- If needed, create a 'Garmin' folder on the 'Garmin' drive.
- Copy-paste or drag the gmapbmap.im file from your desktop into the Garmin folder.
- Disconnect the unit from your computer and shut it down.

Never ever heard of this before! Very surprising! If this is the same device you are still having issues with in your firmware 5.20 post, get it replaced under warranty!

Yes, same device! Not sure if software issues are covered by warranty, but good to check which options I have. After all a non working device is a non working device which means warranty does apply.
After reviving the unit it seems work fine. You just run into different bugs with different firmware versions. Issues that other people don't seem to have...

I would be persistent with Garmin until they replace that device.
And NEVER format the new one!
