Montana 7x0i and APRS

Unread post by Remotruker »

I am looking to replicate what the Kenwood D710 can do with the Garmin Oregon system, but in a much smaller package. I want a headless APRS tracking system, with just the waypoints popping up on the garmin.

Example video:

Instead of the Kenwood, i'm looking at using a TinyTrack4 (MTT4BT) to take APRS audio, and convert it to NMEA serial waypoints ($GPWPL & $PGRMW) and send to the Montana.

Anybody doing this or know if it can/cannot be done?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, no responses as of yet.

I do tinker with HAM and GMRS radios, so this subject also interests me.

Have you learned any more since posting this question?

I've been working on this with my Yaesu FT5D and Garmin Montana 750i.

I was able to get this working with the Yaesu CT-169 Data\Serial cable and Garmin Serial Data/Power Cable (PART NUMBER 010-11131-00) to a Garmin Rino 650.

Using a OTG mini to micro USB adapter I could not get NMEA or Spanner working on the Montana 750i. I did order AMPS Rugged mount (P/N 010-12881-08) which does have serial input, not sure if they have that disabled on the USB and you need to use the GPIO pins. That or my adapter isn't the correct one. I also tried both 4800 and 9600 baud rates, also reversing the RX and TX incase a null modem was needed. If the new rugged mount doesn't work I will open a case with Garmin to hopefully get this enabled. Seems like if they have the cables on a $70 mount it should support it with no issue.

Looks like someone else has this working with the AMPS mount. Looking forward for my delivery Friday so I can test it myself. Only problem is the Car mount (Suction Cup Mount with Speaker P/N 010-12881-00) doesn't have a serial data in. May need to look at adding the function to those three pins. viewtopic.php?f=66&t=1368

Yes, this won't work, because AFAIK, no adapters exists, which do have all conntected pins. You would need a 1:1 adapter for all 5 pins. OTG cables usually do not work, because the pin5 is then connected to GND.

How did you connected the cable? As the cable has micro usb, you would need to cut the connector and solder a micro one to the cable for Montana 700 series.

So from the video above I thought it was found that the 5th pin just needed to be grounded for the OTG function of USB. You are saying that pin is used for data with that cable? Hence the need for the 5 pin 1:1. Has anyone tried modifying the cable from the mini to a micro end?

I rewatched the video, and I was wrong, it is a 1:1. I cut the end off of the Garmin cable I currently have and there is a yellow wire going to the 5th pin. Of course none of the micro USB cables I currently have are 5 wire.
