re "spanner mode", being asked whether to go into USB mode every time the car is started sounds like a pain. Do you know whether this happens when plugged into a "dumb" USB port as well (ie one that is purely for charging and has no computer interface behind it)?

Probably quicker to test that and report the results than wait for someone else to test and report the results for you....
