I used to have a Garmin 62s for several years but i never needed to recalibrate the compass when i changed the batteries?

The three axis compass is much more sensitive by design, and a simple change of battery chemistry can affect how it reads, thus Garmin recommends calibrating the compass after each battery change.

Of course, you may not observe any change in operation, and compass calibration is always up to user discretion.
