Montana randomly powers off with battery < 40%

Unread post by ConiKost »

I noticed first problem in December, that my Montana started in outdoor usage to power off. Completely at random tasks, like main menu, map settings, just watching map or use geocaching functions. Power off seems to come quite fast after on. Mostly after 1-2 minutes after start. But can also take longer like 10 minutes. Today I got the same problem, but being at home. The only common I see, when that happened, that my battery was less than 40%.

Could be this a battery issue?

Unfortunately, the only way to test for a battery issue is to have a second battery ready at similar charge level to swap and retest with.

Of course, you could remove the battery you have when this occurs and make sure the contacts are very clean, perhaps with a cotton swab and some rubbing alcohol?

I have seen similar reports on other forums, and someone even reported that Garmin suggested to them this may be a hardware fault, but no additional information was provided.

Hi.
Try newer batteries, the old may deliver too little current if they start to be worn out.
If that does not help, it is probably something that has broken in the unit.

I had the same issue with an old Etrex vista hcx.
At first when the issue occurred, it was purely a battery issue, batteries were simply worn out.
After yet a few years and twice i had the unit accidentally submerged once and once soaked by rain for 2-3 hours the unit showed this issue with fresh batteries too, i judged something must have gone bad by the water. Eventually it became so bad that i had to scrap the device.

Hm, I currently don't have a second one.

Since I got further multiple shutdows on random fuctions, while battery was nearly full, I don't think this is a battery issue.

This issue here seems 100% related to Crash 11. Once I create custom map sets and set a device langauge other than english, my device started to power off randomly. This is not related to the battery at all.
