What were the steps taken to lead up to this behavior?

If the unit will not finish the boot process, you can try to force USB Mass Storage Mode to remove any recent files and see if that improves anything.

The following procedure forces your GPSMAP 66 into USB Mass Storage Mode so that you can delete/remove/rename any recently added files:
  • 1. Remove battery and microSD card from your GPSMAP 66
  • 2. Connect the GPSMAP 66 to your computer with a USB cable
  • 3. immediately press and hold the D-PAD (Up) button
  • 4. If necessary, cycle the (Power) button to initiate a power on sequence
  • 5. Release the D-PAD (Up) button after the USB symbol is displayed on the screen
  • 6. The GPSMAP 66 will enter Forced USB Mass Storage Mode
  • 7. Remove or rename any recently added maps, images, gpx or other files that may be causing the issue
  • 8. Disconnect the GPSMAP 66 from the USB cable
  • 9. Install previously removed battery and microSD card
  • 10. Power up the GPSMAP 66
  • 11. Repeat Steps 1-10 as needed until the GPSMAP 66 boots properly

If no improvement, then a Master Reset may be in order:

How do I Master Reset my GPSMAP 66?
  • Power the GPSMAP 66 off.
  • Press and hold the (Page) and (Enter) buttons simultaneously.
  • Press and release the (Power) button.
  • The GPSMAP 66 will begin the boot process.
  • Release the (Page) and (Enter) buttons after backlight illuminates.
  • When prompted "Erase all user data?", select [Erase].
