OSM maps freezing up device

Unread post by hangman »

My 66st freezes up after a little bit of panning and zooming when using OSM maps (on an SD card). I've used topo OSM maps from 3 different sources, and the same thing happens with all. Must disconnect the battery to get the GPSr running again.

No problems running the built in topo map, or Garmin's City Navigator off the SD card.

I can not remember this happening on my Montana 680. The reason for buying the 66 was mainly that the Montana is too bulky and heavy. As for now, the 66 is no good replacement for the Montana. I am disappointed.

Am I the only one with this issue?

Hi Hangman,

I have been using OSM maps in Europe (mostly from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/), and no freezes so far. All on SD. Built-in topo is also OK. You use the latest firmware for the 66? Overlapping mapsets? Do you have just ONE mapset enabled at any time, in case of overlapping mapsets? Which OSM sources do you use?

Thanks for replying, RaoulBE.

Yes I have the latest software (3.40). Overlapping maps - the same happens with only one map enabled.
I tried the Montana SD card (with the same topo maps) in the 66 and it still freezes up.

The maps I've been using are from these three sources:
http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
http://www.frikart.no/garmin/
http://www.freizeitkarte-osm.de/garmin/en/

... and the time it takes before freezing up can vary quite a bit.

A few times the 66 froze after just moving the cursor towards the screen edge. Say that it took 1-3 seconds. Also happened after a fresh reboot.
The longest time before freezing could be after about 3-5 minutes of panning and zooming.
I'd say the normal is 1-2 minutes.

Hi,

so the same SD card works OK in your Montana? Really strange... Just a few things you can give a try: use the JaVaWa tool (https://www.javawa.nl/) and see if it can find any errors on your 66st, or any corrupt files. Is your SD card <= 32GB and FAT32 formatted? No .img file larger than 4 GB? Are there any other files on the card, like .gpx files or something? Just to be sure that the FAT32 filesystem is OK: verify the filesystem the card in a separate SD card reader (Windows: disk properties > Tools > check for file system errors). I don't know how robust the firmware of Montana / 66st is dealing with file system errors. Next suggestion: try reformatting the SD card (make a backup first), then copy the .img files back to the card.
The OSM sources you use are OK AFAIK, used them myself.

Thanks for your suggestions, RaoulBE :)

I loaded one map onto the device memory (SD card unplugged), and yes, it failed again. Twice so far. Though, I had to pan and zoom for some minutes before it froze these times. Then the SD card is no longer the suspect.

Next is to try the JaVaWa tool, but I have some kids that need my attention before that. Thanks for your help!

I too have been using OSM maps in Australia and the USA from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ and no freezes so far (that I suspect were caused by map zooming)

Hi all, update on the freezing matter:

I have not yet fully concluded about the problem, but at least the maps from frikart.no are freezing up the 66 very quickly. The overlay track maps also freeze up. All the frikart maps also have problems with routing (and this applies to my Montana 680 too). The whole website looks very unattended. It's a pity, because I really like the frikart maps.

I haven't tried any new maps from garmin.openstreetmap.nl so far.

THE GOOD NEWS is that the maps from freizeitkarte-osm.de are all working very well!

Hi
I seem to have the same problem with OSM Maps from frikart.no.

The 66ST freeze from time to time. And the batteries need to be taken out to reboot.

Hej, i use 7 OSM Maps from frikart.no.
Never had a problem.
Works great.
Maybe you can check them with JAVAWA JDM!
