Unable to download maps due to incorrect free space check [Bug 38]

New bug on 8.80: when you download a map via MapManager and have set the storage location to the SD card, the unit will give an error message that there is insufficient free space even though the SD card has plenty of space left. This seems to happen when the map size is larger than the available free space on internal storage, even though the storage location of the map is set to SD card.

After some additional testing it appears that the map is first downloaded to internal storage, and after successful download it is moved to the SD card. That would explain why sufficient free space is needed on the Internal Storage. One wonders why a development team decided on implementing the download functionality this way...

Ok so a Garmin support rep clarified on the Garmin forums that this behavior is as designed. Map downloads are first downloaded to the internal storage before being moved to the SD card…

It makes you wonder who at Garmin actually approves these kind of changes and what their acceptance test procedure is…

This was not the behavior with pervious releases and I fully expect it will be corrected in an upcoming firmware revision.
