Montana 610 Winter Use

Unread post by neilwoody »

Recently, I used my Montana 610 with the rechargeable lithium battery pack for a backcountry skiing trip in temperatures around 12 degrees F. I carried the GPS using the Clakit StrapPack Clip-On Pouch for GPS. The pouch worked well, giving the 610 a clear view of the sky. I had 9/10 GPS satellites and 4 or 5 Glonass ones with an accuracy of about 9 or 10 feet under snow-covered evergreens. After nearly 5 hours, the battery had plenty of charge remaining. I have the trails in my area as a map overlay on my GPS and the displayed "track" was spot-on the displayed trail.

Nice to hear people are still getting good use out of these decade old devices!

Any photos of the Montana 610 in the snow you can share?

I should have mentioned another way that I can improve the accuracy and GPS satellite acquisition performance of my Montana 610. Following instruction on this GPSrChive page:
Spoiler
I install the Get EPO file on my GPSr and run the program just before each use. Installing an up to date EPO file speeds up satellite acquisition time.
