Disassembled a 7xx Series?

Unread post by LostAgain »

Anybody pulled a 7xx series GPS apart yet?
Just wondering how difficult it is to get at the backlights for the screen.

Page 3 of the document provided below shows the display assembly (assumed to include backlight) inside the front cover/housing, but no securing method is apparent, suggesting to us that perhaps it may be glued or otherwise fused to the front cover to maintain the IPX7 MIL STD 810G waterproofing capability.

We have not disassembled a Montana 7x0 to ascertain the validity of this assumption.

Thanks for that.
Yeah that's about all I've been able to find too, seems the front of the screen, backlighting and the rear metal base piece/plate shown in that pdf are all joined and installed to the unit as one.
No doubt it would either destroy it or render it useless if it was separated when not designed to be, unless it was done by someone who specialises in that type of thing perhaps.
Spoiler
If they were a bit cheaper I might buy one to have a play with, but not for $132 AU.

I guess I'll have to again dig up some different % window tints to try on it.
It irks me somewhat that the quality of the display's colouring in night mode is very poor, due to the white backlighting I believe.
I have spent many hours going through online reviews and only one of them mentions the backlighting at night time, and nothing other than it was adequate for night time use, that reviewer wasn't at all impressed with it's daytime brightness and believed it was too dull.
Seems I'm one of the very few who needs to use a GPS constantly at night... :|

What are you wanting to do with the backlight?

It was an idea to try and get the screen at night to display the colours closer to how I believe they should be displayed, by perhaps changing the backlighting from white to something else, or adding another layer of some kind of tinting behind the screen to see if it could be improved etc..
The white backlighting seems to mess the colours up somewhat, and for what it cost me for this thing, I'm not impressed.

I was wanting to try and get black displaying as black, currently it shows as a washed out grey that seems to effect the sharpness and contrast between the other colours as well, the brighter the backlight is set the worse it gets.
There's a pic in one of my other threads here showing the difference between it and a 276CX's screen display, the bug 54 thread I think.
Even the Montana 6xx series the backlighting at night is far better than what I see on the 700.
I know the types of screens are different between the 3 models, with the newer 700 being the poorest of the displays.
One would think a newer technology device would have a better quality display in both day and night conditions, I believed it would when purchasing it unseen, was pretty disappointing after getting it and setting it up in the vehicle to use then discovering the display at night was as poor as it is.

Garmin as usual are not interested, several times I have mentioned and questioned this issue for perhaps possible improvement in the future and each time it has been ignored.
