Programming a Garmin Chirp results in a device crash [Crash 02]

Unread post by LeBombardier »

Hey All,

I have a known issue for you here as discussed in a previous thread, but none officially listed on the GPSrChive discussion forums as far as I'm aware. For the purposes of documentation I thought it'd be a good idea to set up a dedicated thread on the matter. This is related to #2 in the Crash Bugs section of 'Common Issues' for this device, unresolved at point of submitting this thread.

The issue is that a Garmin Chirp device causes the Montana 700 to crash when programming the Chirp. It has meant that I have a new Chirp that cannot be programmed, but is being detected. Garmin told me that the issues raised in the past should've been fixed by new firmware, and as they didn't hear back from the two UK customers that initially raised the issue they closed their cases assuming it had indeed been fixed. These issues were raised by myself with Garmin on 1 September 2021 and currently under investigation. I'll update this thread as and when I hear back from them.

Related (closed) GARMIN thread

See you on the field,

I was not able to reproduce that with my chirp. Just works fine.

Update from Garmin UK:
We can confirm that this issue is expected to be resolved within the next software update of the unit. Once this has been set for release, we'll be in touch to let you know.
Which means I'll let you know, unless you get to see the release notes before I'm informed. 8-)

By accident, I managed to make this reproducable. It looks like, that first connect works always fine, but once chirp is connected and being access again, my Montana just poweres off.

Thanks for the update!

Hopefully you can confirm it is no longer present after the next firmware is published!

Garmin also replied to me, that there is already an internal ticket and added me, so I will get informed, once it is fixed.

Seems be fixed with firmware 10.50, as it does not crash for me.

Yep, can confirm it works beautifully on the Montana 700 running on firmware 10.50 now. Can finally get my Chirp out there in the wild! :D
