Default Route Via Symbol set to Blue Push Pin on Device

Unread post by robert »

Is there a way to get the default waypoint symbol for route via points to match the symbol used in Basecamp. When I download to the 66 all of the symbols for the via points get changed to blue push pins.

I have tried adding "Pin, Blue.bmp" to the custom waypoints folder on the 66 and designing it to be a dot. But this has no effect.

Further details:

Basecamp populates the GPX file with

<sym>Waypoint</sym>

for each waypoint. However Waypoint is not a valid symbol?

If I create a Waypoint which is attached to a custom waypoint symbol in Basecamp. The GPX file looks correct

<sym>Custom 10</sym>

But the 66 displays the custom symbol AND a Pin, Blue on top of it??

What I was after was a clean route displayed on the 66 with key points highlighted with a different symbol. Looks like I can do this with text but the route on the display looks a mess covered in Blue Push Pins?

Are the Basecamp Dev Team talking to Device Dev Teams?

Again if anybody has a fix or workaround for this, ideas greatly appreciated.

Might you be able to upload a screen capture or two to help us understand exactly what you are seeing? Also, maybe share a GPX for testing?

As a follow up additional query is it possible to stop the 66 displaying the waypoint name. I only want to see the comment/note and not the name.

I have tried adding "Pin, Blue.bmp" to the custom waypoints folder on the 66 and designing it to be a dot. But this has no effect.
First the bad news:

I spent some time testing on my GPSMAP 66s, and have determined that there is currently no way (that I can find) to edit the appearance of 'via points' along a route. I tried setting them to 'Do Not Alert' hoping that might remove them from the map, but it did not. I tested with different routing settings, but all routes display all via points, always.

Now some good news:

I loaded a single 'Custom Waypoint Symbol' for 'Pin, Blue.bmp' and found that all the via points in my routes were immediately displayed with this new symbol, and did not require any changes to the routes or GPS files.

If this method is not working on your GPSMAP 66, please open the waypoint manager and edit any waypoint, select the symbol, then scroll to 'Markers' and check to see if the first symbol displayed in the second row matches what you loaded. If not, then you may have formatted the custom symbol improperly, preventing it from loading, or you may have too many custom symbols in the 'Garmin/CustomSymbols' directory on your GPSMAP 66. The maximum allowed is 56.

If you want to test with a known good symbol, you may find something you like in the GPSrChive Custom Symbol Repository.

More good news!

You can disable waypoint symbol names on the map page display by configuring:

Setup > Map > Advanced Setup > Text Size > User Waypoints > None.

Much appreciated for your efforts. Some good news at this end also. The problem with the device not accepting my "Pin, Blue.bmp" was I had just tipped over the maximum allowed custom symbols. Once I cleaned a few out this is now picked up.

Below 11836 and 11835 are plain waypoints. Other are attached placed symbols.

However I still get the Waypoint names displayed even if User Waypoints are set to None in Map setup. Have you tried this on routes and it is working at your end?

Mark a waypoint near your current location and give it a unique name.

Now view the map page near that waypoint while changing between:

Setup > Map > Advanced Setup > Text Size > User Waypoints > None

and

Setup > Map > Advanced Setup > Text Size > User Waypoints > Small

The waypoint you just marked will only display the 'name' when something other than "None' is selected, correct?

Nothing I change in

Setup > Map > Advanced Setup > Text Size > User Waypoints > ?

effects the visibility or the size of the waypoint text I am seeing. It does however effect the size of the text being displayed on POIs which happen to be select as waypoints on a route.
