20 *.IMG files have always been the maximum allowed for all Mass Storage capable Garmin GPSr.

Yes that's true, but given that the 66s supports 15000 map tiles (compared to 3000 tiles on GPSmap 64 models) then you would have thought that they would have proportionately upped the limit of IMG files allowed.

Garmin has written back to me, but only to ask the same questions again. What does a case number look like?
In their emails there is a reference number and a Q# number.

I don't know.
Ref num is 10 positions, 8 digits and then K0.
Q# is 7 digits, starting with 1.
