Unable to Download BirdsEye Direct [Crash 16]

Hi.
Gpsmap 66st 9.60 firmware.
Go to BirdsEye Direct from main menu.
Select Download imagery.
Enable wi-fi if asked and select Download imagery again if needed.
Select a location (i tried waypoint and map).
Enter other details (i used highest resolution).
Press download.

Wait a few seconds for download to start, unit shuts down.

After restarting the new download is in pending status, trying to download will again shut down unit.

Is anyone else observing this?

Duplicated on multiple GPSMAP 66 series devices. Posted to GPSrChive > GPSMAP 66 > Common Issues > Crash 16.

Submitted to Garmin software engineers.

Thanks for forwarding to Garmin, i hope they take your reports more seriously than if one writes to the product support.
It is just so sad that for every update a number of fixes are made but also a few new issues introduced.
Is the OS that hard to program or what can be the issue?

Freshers in low cost locations who dont know the codebase or any product basics. Once they know a little they go to another company. (experience based good guess)

I'm not convinced this bug is entirely due to the new firmware for these devices.

When I attempt to download BirdsEye Direct satellite imagery, every time, there is a long delay while the message "Waiting for connection to BirdsEye imagery servers." is displayed, then as soon as the data starts flowing, the GPSr crashes.

Could be an issue with what the servers are sending....

Could be, but the crash is there today too.
Even if it is a server issue, the unit should not crash just because it cannot reach the server or because it got some garbage from the server, it should better give an error message.

Hi.
Garmin tried the trick of reset and update via Garmin express on me, i tid not take the bait.
After i explained that the issue was introduced on upgrade from 7.60 to 9.60 they replied:


We have created a case as we were able to replicate it on other devices.

Unfortunately, we do not have a timeline as to when this will be resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

My luck was shortlived, later i received the next email from Garmin:
"Our engineers tested on several GPSmap 66 series devices (including the 66st) and after resetting the device and verifying software was up to date using Garmin Express, that resolved the issue."

Did anyone try resetting?

If i do reset, which files do i need to save to be able to restore all my settings; menues, menu order, search options, units of measure and whatever else that is settings based?

Tell them this is a bug and needs to be corrected.

Nowhere did the latest firmware release notes indicate we needed to back up all our files and master reset the device after installation.

They need to resolve this with a new firmware that does not require a master reset.
