67 Altimeter Elevation issue

Unread post by RickN55 »

Got my 67 yesterday andI've noticed the Altimeter Elevation is all over the shop. My house height is 296 feet abvove sea level,. My 65s if I leave it turned on sat doing nothing it will always show 290-300 feet elevation at my house as does my 60CSX. But this new 67 has a mind of it's own, I've calibrated it to the correct height several times and if I leave it sat in the same place doing nothing it goes from 296 right down to -460 feet! Is this a known issue with the 67 or have I got a fauly unit? Within 4 minutes it went down from 296 feet to -50 and the unit hadn't moved I've tried changing settings on the unit but it is still the same.

See pictures attached. Same place not moved between the pictures only to take the case off the unit.

A. Firmware version?
B. Which calibration method was used?
C. Where exactly is the GPSMAP 67 placed during this test?
D. What options are configured in Setup > Altimeter?

Also, please see the Forum Guidelines for image posting protocol.

Firmware 5.30
I calibrated using both the known elevation several times and several times using the "GPS Elevation"

Settings 7
Auto Calibration - Once, I've tried both OFF and Continuous several times too
Barometer Mode - Vairable Elevation
Pressure Trending - Save when power on
Plot type - i've tried them all

Ive tried the unit leaving it both in my house and outside in the garden on the table. If I press enter button and stop the recording the elevation stops on what ever it was when I pressed stop. If I leave it recording and still it goes up and down like a yoyo like 200+ feet either way. My 65s and 60CSx altimeter is bang on and they're much older devices. If it doesn't sort itself out it'll be returned.

Sorry if I made an error uploading pics, I've never done it before and new to the place.

Anyone else with a 67 can leave their device on and still for a few minutes and see if the elevation goes up and down like a Yoyo?

We are currently unable to duplicate here, so please try a Master Reset on your brand new GPSMAP 67 (sometimes needed on new devices after they leave factory), and retest.
Elevation Test

  • How do I Master Reset my GPSMAP 67?
    • Power the GPSMAP 67 off.
    • Press and hold the (Page) and (Enter) buttons simultaneously.
    • Press and release the (Power) button.
    • The GPSMAP 67 will begin the boot process.
    • Release the (Page) and (Enter) buttons after the backlight illuminates.
    • When prompted "Erase all user data?", select [Erase] and press (Enter).

I managed to get to the bottom of the issue. I'd put some protection tape over the back of the unit and it covered the little hole above the CE mark which is used for Barometer. All is fine now and sits at the elevation it should. :)

If it wasn't for Andy at GPS Training I'd never have knew what was causing it. He informed me what the little hole above the CE marker was for.

Also another quick question
What covers do people recommend for the 67? The old 62-65 Garmin made specific cases for them but can't find any for the 67?

And on the Sat signal bars on the top left of the screen what does the "x2" mean?

Sounds like you have not yet visited the GPSrChive > GPSMAP 67 wiki.

See Function > Status Bar Icons to answer your question about the "x2".

Make sure you check out the Accessories page while you are there, or jump directly to the GPSrChive Store to see popular cases etc.
