Forced USB Mass Storage Mode

• If your Oregon 6x0 is freezing or crashing during startup, it is commonly a recently added map, image, gpx or other file that is creating the issue.
• This procedure forces your Oregon 6x0 into USB Mass Storage Mode so that you can delete/remove/rename any recently added files:


1. Power the Oregon 6x0 off (press and hold power button ~10 seconds to force power down if necessary)
2. Remove the device batteries
3. Connect the Oregon 6x0 to your computer with a USB cable
4. Immediately after the Oregon 6x0 starts the boot process press and hold the power button until the GPSr powers off
5. Press and hold the power button until the USB logo appears on the screen  (~30 seconds)
6. Release the power button
7. The Oregon 6x0 has entered Forced USB Mass Storage Mode
8. Remove or rename any recently added maps, images, gpx or other files that may be causing the issue
9. Disconnect the Oregon 6x0 from the USB cable
10. Install previously removed batteries
11. Power the Oregon 6x0 on
12. Repeat Steps 1-11 as needed until the Oregon 6x0 boots properly

Forced RGN Firmware Installation

• This procedure (Windows only at this time) will force a low level installation of the Oregon 6x0 firmware
• After completing this procedure the Oregon 6x0 will be running the firmware version provided by the RGN file
• Warning: Flashing firmware to a device other than that for which it is designed will render the device permanently inoperable

Preparation

• Create a new empty directory on your computer desktop and name it 'RGN'
• Download RGN_Tool.exe to the \RGN\ directory you created
• Download Updater.exe to the \RGN\ directory you created

Extract RGN from GCD

1. Download the desired GCD file from the Firmware page to the \RGN\ directory you created
2. Extract the GCD file from the downloaded .zip file
3. Delete the downloaded .zip file
4. Rename the GCD file to gupdate.gcd
5. Drag the gupdate.gcd file to RGN_Tool.exe
6. Verify the HWID displayed in the RGN_Tool window matches your GPSr HWID
• Oregon 6x0 HWID = 1651
7. In the RGN_Tool window, select 'File > Save to RGN' and save as gupdate.rgn in the \RGN\ directory you created
8. Delete the gupdate.gcd file from the \RGN\ directory you created
9. Close the RGN_Tool

Verify Progress

• The \RGN\ directory should now contain these files:


1. RGN_Tool.exe
2. Updater.exe
3. gupdate.rgn

Flash RGN

• Steps 5-7 must be completed before the GPSr enters Forced USB Mass Storage Mode.
• If this happens, restart the Flash RGN process.


1. Disconnect all GPSr from your computer
2. Drag the gupdate.rgn file to Updater.exe
3. After the Updater window appears, select the 'USB Device:' radio button
4. Power the Oregon 6x0 off (press and hold power button ~10 seconds to force power down if necessary)
5. Connect the Oregon 6x0 to your computer with a USB cable
6. immediately press and hold the power button
7. When the Oregon 6x0 appears in the 'USB Device:' window, select 'OK'
8. Continue holding the power button
9. When the Oregon 6x0 displays "Software Loading", release the power button
10. The Updater will display a download progress bar
11. When the flash is complete, the updater will display a 'Successful Update' message
12. The Oregon 6x0 will restart with the new firmware version installed
