Oregon 600 Help avoiding roads

Hi I have a Oregon 600 with GB Discovery 50K maps installed.
Whenever I select a route ( pre plotted) I get the route displayed withe the distance (eg:5.2miles) and the start button displayed, but after about 8 seconds the route changes to display road directions and the distance doubles.
I Have Hiking as activity and lock on road disabled, but it alway updates the route with road waypoints displayed making it impossible to follow my original route.
How do I prevent it from doing this, I only ever use it for hiking.
