Gpsmap 66s , FW 4.20, no gps Firmware after power outage

Unread post by fulbrich »

Hi,

I had an updated Gpsmap 66s wit FW 4.20 running for some weeks.
The devices powered down yesterday, after the batteries ran out of power.
I removed the batteries an next day I inserted new one.

After powering on I recognised no GPS Fix.
I had a look after the firmware version in the test and info screen and see
Software Version 4.20, GPS Version 0.0
For me , it looks like that the firmware for the gps chipset is gone.

I tried a complete reset with and without removing batteries, no change.
In the Moment the Garmin backbone is down, which means Garmin connect does not work for update an Registration services.

Tomorrow I may start my bike vacation without a GPS, I think...

I tried to flash the gpschip firmware as described in the howto section, but it seems that the firmware is not picked up. Is the syntax correct ?

[Gps]\Garmin\RemoteSW\chipset.gcd

Maybe the name for the firmware has to be different !

Help is very appreciated

Best regards
Frank

Hi all,
Not sure if it is important or not.
Maybe it is a hint for a hardware failure.

The test page (enter + power button) says :
GPS Version : 0. I am not sure if this is a hardware or software version.

The Info screen says:
GPS Software Version : 0.00 I think this is the Chipset Firmware

I am not sure what GPS Version means.

Best regards
Frank

That is not correct.

Please see the GPSMAP 66 Firmware page for correct instructions.

"Software Version" is the device firmware version.

"GPS Software Version" is the GPS chipset version.

You need to re-flash the GPS Chipset.

See the GPSMAP 66 Firmware page for detailed instructions.

If not successful, your device may have a hardware fault that requires replacement.

Download, unzip and replace [GPSMAP 66]\Garmin\RemoteSW\006B331300.gcd with the desired chipset software version

Good morning,
I downloaded GPS Software Version 2.8, created the Subfolder, copied the file an renamed it to 006B331300.gcd

After powering on the gpsmap starts and recognises a firmware update.

It stops in a loop by telling me „Updating GPS Firmware 1%“

I guess I have to return my GPS after 6 month in use.

Thanks for you help.

Hello DDM,

thanks for your answer to by problem.
To be honest, I am afraid to destroy mandatory files which are neccessary for the operation system of the device.

I did a factory reset and deleted all custom file like my maps.

The current.gpx is now renamed to org_current.gpx ... but unfortunately it does not help in my problem.
Did you rename more files ? Maybe you can remember what to rename else.

Best regards

When I came back from my vacation I recognised that the Garmin Cloud is back.
I connected my Garmin with Garmin Express, which offers Some updates for Timezone and translations. After updating I get my GPS fix and the GPS Modul Software is recognised.

After digging the Garmin Express logfiles I found that a gupdate file had been transferred without announcements in the Garmin Express GUI.

Well it works in the moment.
