Outdoor Maps+ now has coverage for Europe

Garmin has expanded the Outdoor Maps+ coverage to Europe. See the Outdoor Maps+ product page for what coverage is available. For example, TOPO PRO coverage is not available for several areas like British Isles, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Portugal. Hopefully this will be expanded in the near future.

Are TOPO Pro maps the same which you can buy for specific countries?

It would seem so. I downloaded a region in Italy, and looking at the map IMG file it shows "OM+ TrekMap Italia v6 PRO, Region 2" in the file data. Only one file, so it does not prove it applies to all available map regions in Europe, but it seems likely.

Also could explain why some European countries are not available in Outdoor Maps+, as Garmin does not sell any TOPO PRO maps for those countries (except British Isles but those are raster maps, not vector maps).

Findings so far: you can only select relatively small regions, the selection applies mostly to satellite imagery and e.g. the topographical maps are downloaded per region. For instance, I did an 8km by 8km download centered around Oberstdorf, Germany (near the Austrian border) and the following was downloaded:

• The Southwest region of Topo Germany Pro V9.
• All of Austria from Topo Alps Pro.
• HD DEM model of the EU.
• Buildings seem to be in regions, similar to the topography. Seemingly all of Austria, haven't looked in detail what part of Germany, but certainly not all of it.

So, with a carefully selected locations, you could download a full topo map of a country.

Using the maps from Basecamp is excruciatingly slow even with a GPSMAP 67. However, the old trick of making a macOS disk image with a Garmin and copying the maps there still works great and gives speedy access to the maps without the GPSr unit connected.

Yes, I've seen the same as well, satellite imagery is only small areas (as it already was without an Outdoor Maps+ subscription) and other layers are have different region sizes.

I've extracted the names of the map volumes that are download, so you can get an impression of how many regions there are.
