Displayed vs Recorded Elevation Values

Unread post by yayayaya »

Hello everyone.
My Oregon 700 got used, for 1 month it worked well in mtb, measuring even more ascent than friends with the Edge, then I don't know if it was the upgrade to 5.30 or other, but it measures less and less like 1250m+ vs 1450m+ ( Edge 1030), or 44m+ vs 144m+ !!! and it often happens that it marks 1070m+ in the dashboard and only 896m+ on the recorded both 1 second and auto high frequency.
now I use GPS + GLONASS settings, barometer calibration ONCE.
I also have an Edge 800 and it shows altitude changes much faster and far less wrong, Oregon 30 seconds.
I tried to restore the old firmware 4.70 , full reset but it doesn't seem to change anything.
According to Garmin, if the barometer was broken, it would read -20000m.
Tomorrow I try the firmware 5.20
thank you

Please take screen captures and save the associated *.FIT and *.GPX files for later reference.

Some of those links are not available or shared public, but no matter, as all the data viewed is 'Filtered' by the webpage software.

To determine where the issue is, we need to have the actual *.GPX and *.FIT files directly from each GPSr.

ok, I'll post two releases tomorrow.
Today I tried the firmware 5.20 10km 50m + on trip, but when I save in the report they become 34m + already.
I was building some trails so it's so little, tomorrow I'll do a lot more to understand if the difference is always 16m or 30%
sure that at the start the altitude was 1-2m against the real 4-5m living on the sea and on the return -5m

If you can change to English Language for the screen captures that would be very helpful, but not required.

Thank You.

towards the end of the lap
Oregon 700 378m+ + 165m+ = adding 533m+ on trip
Edge 800 609m+
Edge 520 plus 464m+ !!!!! on trip

file fit at the end,

2 for Oregon 700:

2021-02-03 13-10-42.fit

2021-02-03 10-44-50.fit

one for Edge 800:

finished the test.
Good news, with the firmware 5.20 Oregon 700 seems to correctly measure the ascent and the trip corresponds approximately to the recorded one (record high frequency, barometer calibration once)
Xc circuit with short but very steep ramps, jumps and drops that have always put the various devices in difficulty.
After 1 hour with the
Oregon 700 165m + on trip, 159m + recorded(i stopped and saved the activity for check value)
Edge 800 175m + on trip
____________________________________________________
towards the end of the lap
Oregon 700 378m+ + 165m+ = adding 533m+ on trip
Edge 800 609m+
Edge 520 plus 464m+ !!!!! on trip
___________________________________________________________
end of lap
Oregon 700 165m+ + 392m+ = 557m+ on trip, 159m+ + 383m+ = 542m+ recorded
Edge 800 622m+ on trip
Edge 520 plus 478m+ !!! on trip

let's say a single lap of the circuit is about 150m+
in the past Oregon also misured on trip 160m+, while today 123m+ on trip, Edge 800 140m+ on trip and strangely Edge 520plus 100-110m+.
550m+ is a consistent estimated value, maybe Oregon scored a few meters less, but better than Edge 520.
Overall the test went well, the recorded almost coincides with the trip.
By making an overpass, the altitude finally rose on both of them by about 6m with fairly similar times between the two devices
Seeing the tracks recorded in an empirical way I can say that the Oregon 700 and the Edge 800 are more accurate because there are more coincident lines.
I'll do some more tests on longer climbs, but it seems to go better with this firmware

For Clarity:

Are you happy with the results you just posted using Garmin Oregon 7x0 with Firmware v5.20?

If Yes, please test again with Oregon 7x0 Firmware v5.30, and if you can, please share both *.FIT and *.GPX files for inspection. (You may have to enable *.GPX in Oregon 7x0 > Setup > Recording > Advanced Setup > Output Format.

Thank you!
